WIWAG--3 LEAGUES/STATUS

I waited a bit after the State of the Union message to see how things shook out for managers and WIWAG’s future seasons.

Here is where we stand right now:

WWG-I: For the 1949 season, Bob Mayhew, who assumed control of Toronto down the stretch, will not return. He is in fact, dropping all of his DMB leagues and will spend time doing solo replays.

Marc Robinson, from the WWG-III league will take over Toronto. No additional managerial changes at this time.

As previously noted, I will retain this league as commish.

WWG-II: As noted above, Bob will be leaving and another member from WWG-III, Peter Reoch, will assume control of the Mill Street Blues starting in 1960. No other changes as Joe Heiberger agreed to remain in this league with the Redbirds.

Don Rahn will become commish of the WWG-II league.

WWG-III: A number of changes here and we are in need of 4 managers.

Tom Schmidt (Mike C’s son-in-law) will take over Birmingham.

We will need replacement skippers for Gahanna (Bob), Brunswick (no manager), Milwaukee (Jeff), Cincinnati (Joe).

If there are people in your other leagues whom you feel would be a good addition, let me know and I will pass info to Claud who will take over as WWG-III commish

All-WIWAG Championship

Would there be any interest in having an annual all-WIWAG championship? It would help tie the three leagues together, particularly for those of us who do not participate in all three. Sort of like (and I may get shot for this) soccer's Champions' League in Europe.

We could start with a 12-game round robin tourney with each team playing a 2-game home and 2-game road series against each of the other two. The finals would then be a seven-game series between the two teams coming out of the round-robin with the best records. If one manager gets two teams in, he would have the computer manager coach the road team in each game between the two. If somebody had all three teams, we would have to conduct an investigation. . . ;-)

The first could be held once 1948, 1960, and 1971 championship series have all three finished. I know the seasons do not coincide, so it would involve at least one of the champions going back to "last year" to manage their team through the tournament.

Thoughts? Remember, no flaming. :-)

71 WIWAG - Games 1 and 2 - World Series

WIWAG 1971 World Series Game 1

(Gary Nolan vs Vida Blue)
Both teams squandered opportunities early. In the visitor second a Billy Williams walk and Ken McMullen single set up Hal Lanier and Chris Cannizzaro. Neither of those gentlemen came through as Lanier bunted out to Blue and Blue K'd the Aces catcher. Breezy Point's first two batters of the last of the second reached base as Deron Johnson walked and Smith lined a single to center. With runners on first and second and none out, Nolan toughed his way out unscathed by retiring Nettle, Bench, and Cardenas in succession. San Diego nearly drew first blood in the third when Hershberger doubled to the base of the wall in left and raced toward home on a Chris Chambliss single. However, Jim Hickman averted the scoring attempt with a strike to the plate as Bench blocked home and snapped a tag on Hershberger for the final out of the inning. In the last of the third Alomar and Hickman had back-to-back singles with one out, but were left stranded as Dave May popped out and Deron Johnson K'd. More scoring opportunities abounded for San Diego in the fourth. Willie Horton led off with a single to shallow left and Hal Lanier stroked a solid single between short and third with two out. Chris Cannizzaro then struck out as two more men were left on base for the Aces. The bottom of the fourth prompted the first real fireworks of the day as Reggie Smith and Graig Nettles smacked back-to-back homers over the right field wall to propel the Claws to a two nothing lead. Both Nolan and Blue then settled into a groove after that as neither team mounted any scoring opportunities. Nolan went nearly eight innings before being lifted in favor of Fred Scherman in the eighth with one out and Vida Blue tossed eight innings of shutout ball while striking out eight among his 139 pitches. Tommy John worked the ninth for the Claws and retired Williams, McMullen, and pinch hitter Jim Northrup in order to complete the 2 - 0 Breezy Point victory.

Game 2 (Sonny Siebert vs Dave Roberts)

As if tired of having runners reach base and then having nothing to show for it in the prior game, the Aces reversed that trend early in game two. Horace Clarke and Jim Northrup lead the game off with singles to open the game. Billy Williams pounded what looked like a potential double play ball to Alomar, but the quick outfielder beat the throw to first while Clarke scooted home. Willie Horton followed with an infield single and Joe Pepitone reached first and loaded the bases when his home plate dribbler in front of Bench resulted in an errant throw by the usually flawless catcher. Bases loaded and one out and Ken McMullen supplied run number two with a sac fly to left as Billy Leo waltzed home. Hal Lanier flied out to center as the home team was lucky the visitors only got two runs. Breezy Point drew to within a run in the last of the fourth on a Deron Johnson solo blast to left field off of an oh one change up that didn't fool the Claws slugging first sacker. Johnson tied the game at two on his next at bat in the last of the sixth. This time Johnson porched a one-one fastball to deep left center to tie the game at two a piece. The Aces scored once in the top of the seventh on a Horace Clark two out double that brought home Larry Stahl who reached first on a single when pinch hitting for catcher Paul Casanova. The Claws immediately tied the score in the latter half of that inning when Bench singled, stole second and moved to third on a Cardenas single with one out. Sandy Valdespino pinch hit for Dave Roberts but Siebert retired him on a pop out to first as Joe Pepitone reached into the third row of seats along the wall by the dugout for the second out. Sand Alomar came through with a clutch two out single between first and second as Bench scored the tying run before Hickman flied out to center as the game was tied at three after seven complete. Pat Dobson and Siebert pitched scoreless eighth innings as the game moved to the ninth. Things looked ominous for the Claws when Dobson plunked lead off Aces third sacker Ken McMullen on the arm. However, Brinkman forced McMullen out at second, Canizzaro flied out to right, and Siebert grounded out to Dobson to finish off San Diego . Fred Scherman took the mound in the ninth and immediately gave up a single to Nettles which prompted a quick switch to Jim Ray. The move paid immediate dividends when Ray K'd Bench. However, Nettles stole second to take the double play out of the equation and Cardenas was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Rusty Torres sauntered to the plate as a pinch hitter for Dobson and quickly ended the game with a first pitch single between first and second base as Nettles raced home with the game winning run as Breezy Point took two close games at home heading to sunny San Diego with a two zero advantage.

71 WIWAG - Aces Advance to Finals

GAME 6

A clear day in Wrigley as the temp is 52 degrees but with the wind blowing in 26 mph. Match up Siebert vs Gullet
Scoreless until the top of the 3rd when Siebert helped his own cause by hitting a lead off HR. In the bottom of the 4th Aaron led off with a single and Bando followed him with a HR to left and the Outlaws were ahead. In the top of the 5th the Aces had Siebert again leading off and he doubled down the 1B line, Hershberger single to shallow center and Siebert holding up at 2nd base to make sure Willie Davis didn't catch the ball only made it to 3rd base.Clarke grounder to Cepada, who bobbled the ball but still was able to nail Siebert at the plate. Gullet retired the next two quietly to end the inning. Aces had small rallies but in the 9th inning the stage was set for a big Aces rally, Blomberg pinch hit for Clarke and in came Hamilton to face him and after getting 2 strikes on Blomberg he hit him, that was enough for the Outlaws manager and took Hamilton out of the game and replaced him with Romo. Pepitone now was going to pinch hit for Siebert, Blomberg took his lead and on the first pitch Blomberg took off for second, Pepitone took the pitch and Sims fired a rocket to Belanger who tag out Blomberg. Pepitone then singled and Harmon pinch ran for Pepitone. Next batter up was Hershberger but in came Larry Stahl to bat for him. Stahl lined a single to left and when Hank Aaron misplayed the bounce both runners moved up a base, men on 2nd and 3rd,one out, Clarke up followed by Chambliss, Clarke took the 1st two pitches for a ball and on the next pitch hit a pop fly ball to Helms for out number two. With the crowd on its feet hoping for a 7th game up came Chambliss, Chambliss was 0 for 3 with 2 K's so far in the game, Romo first two pitches again were balls and on the on deck circle was Billy Williams who is a terror with runners on base so Rome had to make sure he did not walk Chambliss on the next pitch Chambliss rolled a weak grounder to Helms who throw out Chambliss to end the game and force a game 7 in what has turned out to be a fantastic series between two evenly matched teams.

GAME 7

A clear but cold day in Wrigley today with temp at 38 degrees,Looking at the fans it seems like a Bears football game by the way they were dressed. Match ups Billingham vs Stoneman
Aces struck early in the 1st inning as Clarke led off with a double and Northrup singled him home, Blomberg also singled and before the crowd to get settled in their seats the Aces had scored a run and have runners on 1st and 2nd no outs and Williams coming to the plate. Williams hit a shot to 3B Bando who was playing deep and quickly turned a 5-4-3 DP. Next batter was Pepitone and it seemed like Stoneman wanted no part of him and walked him on 4 pitches, McMullem was up next and struck out to retire the side. the Outlaws were lucky to only have one run scored on them. In the top of the 2nd Billingham hit a HR that marked the 3rd time in this series that an Aces pitcher hit a HR. Both pitchers were in command until the top of the 5th when Blomberg hit a HR to make the score 3-0 Aces. Again no scoring threats until the bottom of the 8th when Cepeda pinch hitting for Stoneman singled Davis hit a hard grounder up the middle and Brinkman who was brought in this inning for def replacement grab the ball flipped it to Clarke who nip Davis at 1st for a DP.Belanger singled and Bonds reach 1st on a infield base hit bring up Hammerin' Hank who represented the tying run at the plate, the fans were looking for the long one but Hammer struck out to retire the side and maybe the Outlaws season. We come to the bottom of the 9th and the crowd is on their feet hoping for one of those classic rallies that the Outlaws have had this season. Bando up and on the 1st pitch lines a basehit, Manual follow with a grounder to second forcing Bando, Helms on a 3-2 count hits the ball off the plate and Cannizzaro one hands it and fires down to first getting Helms out by a step.Sims walks and now Billingham has himself in a jam as he has thrown close to 130 pitches and looks tired. With Hamilton due up Leron Lee pinch hits for him and with the crowd cheering on every pitch hits a roller to McMullen who forces Sims for the final out of the series. The Chicago faithful went home sadly but they saw a great series between the two teams.
